Richard Eaton is a profound scholar and this book edited by him is an example of the manner in which he examines history. That history is not just a collation of facts but an indicator of the human mind and human values as it develops or ossifies is clearly displayed here. It is easy to juggle facts to support a prior viewpoint but the true mark of a scholar is to arrive at conclusions without a predefined prejudice. That most Muslim rulers were rulers first and Muslim only by default and their prime focus was to acquire and sustain power and not suppress or support any particular religion is amply evident here. A good book to clear ones mind of religious prejudices and read history as it was instead of as it could have been.
