My story begins in Camp Taylor and then Louisville, Kentucky. My name is Sam Cooley. At age ten I started working on a truck farm with my older brothers. When I was fourteen in 1939 I had to quit school and help support the family. I worked at the Cabbage Patch Settlement House for about a year and was sent to work for Mrs. Starks. She paid me more than the going wages, every Saturday, so could return to school. I always considered her my angel who pulled me out of the rut I had been in since the day I quit school.
