Description

The Great Gatsby was first published in 1925 and is considered to be F. Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece. This is a large print edition printed in 16 point font size. The mysterious Jay Gatsby uses his fabulous wealth to create an enchanted world fit for his former love, Daisy Buchanan, now married to Tom. Daisy, though, is a romanticised figment of his own imagination, and the extraordinary world that he creates is equally illusory. He gives lavish, legendary, parties where the guests and gate-crashers enjoy free-flowing champagne and cocktails and carefree hospitality. It is easy for modern readers to forget that the story takes place in the time of Prohibition (1920 to 1933) something that would have been immediately apparent when the book was first published. It enforces the nature of the unreal world that Gatsby creates, beyond the reach of the law and the police. But a more sinister reality begins to break through, as idealised romantic figures prove to have human frailties and selfish motivations, and the grandiose world of Gatsby's creation crumbles and disillusion turns to tragedy.A new film, directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan will be released in 2012.

This is one of Fitzgerald Scott's most famous novels. This is the story about America just after WWI where a young Nick Carraway from a Mid Western background returns after fighting the war with dreams of becoming rich as a stock broker in New York. Also staying in the same city is his second cousin Daisy Buchanan who lives with her husband Tom, in the posh East Egg area of the city. However Nick resides in the less fashionable West Egg, inhabited by people who have just have made it rich. He comes to know of his next door neighbour Jay Gatsby who is in the habit of throwing lavish parties at his gargantuan Gothic mansion every weekend. Gatsby claims to be a war hero and they become close friends. At Daisy's residence, Nick meets a beautiful lady called Jordan Baker who tells that Tom has a lover called Myrtle Wilson. Nick also learns that Gatsby throws extravagant parties just to impress Daisy whom he previously loved. Gatsby and Daisy eventually meet up at Nick's residence and thereafter Daisy and Gatsby fall in love again. At a luncheon involving the group, Daisy reveals her love for Gatsby to Tom, who despite in an affair himself, disapproves of his wife’s relationship and asks them to leave. Tom also reveals that Gatsby was a bootlegger earning mega profits from the illicit business. In the ensuing circumstances, Myrtle is hit by Gatsby’s car with Daisy at the wheel George Wilson, Myrtle's husband, believes that Gatsby has cause Myrtle’s death and shoots Gatsby to death and also commits suicide. At Gatsby's funeral, which Nick organizes, he realizes that no one really cared about Gatsby as very few men attend the funeral. Nick is shaken by Gatsby's death and moves back to the Midwest. This is a classic story about the fallacy of the American dream and the moral corruption of people and decadence that has accompanied the quest for wealth.

The Great Gatsby was in my book to read list for quite some time as it was short book. I read long book first thinking that short book can be read any time whenever you have less time. So, reading this book delayed and delayed. But finally I decided to read it. This is well written and entertaining book. This is a sure classic of twentieth-century literature written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway. The central character Jay Gatsby is a mysterious character throughout the novel. He is wealthy and strongly make efforts to proclaim the love of the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Also part of this story is Carraway listening to all of the speculation about Gatsby’s origins and connections, speculation like his youthful days, silliness, etc. The book serves a very specific and tragic end as the customers are careless that leads to their demise. Fitzgerald’s choice of narrator also makes it a great story. This is a story that, in its telling, resembles real life. It the kind of story that stays with you long after the last page turns. I highly recommend it to all those who have not read it yet.
