About the Book:

In recent years our Univerdties have witnessed a remarkable liacrease in the numbet of research scholars. This is partly because research degree has becorse essential for getting an academic asoign- ment end partly because the number of educational institutions has increased considerably. Students usually jump into the held of research due to emotional excitement of getting a higher academic recognition but often without knowing what exactly research is and bow it is conducted.
Scientific investigation presents itself in a more formidable fashion In the faculty of social sciences where quantitative techniques are rather recent inttoduction. With increased emphasir on the use of quantitative methods in social sciences, it is often noted that researchers become victims of frustration and dejection due to their lack of know- ledge of elementary mathematical and statistical methods. Simple concepts such as average behaviour, measure of variability, degree of interdependence, extent of explanatory capability of a simple model, etc. present major hurdles to researchers, otherwise Quite intelligent but devoid ofthe knowledge of quantitatlvo techniques. Such researcherr not only take too long to complete their work but also fail to gain con- fidence that they should have achieved after working forsuchan advanced, academic degree. It is exactly for such type of researchers that we have designed this book.
This book has been so designed as to familiarise a beginner with the basic concepts of research, approaches to research, categories of research, preparation of research proposals, etc., on the one hand and to train him in the use of basic mathematicaland statistical methods for his advantage. Arcsearcher with no mathematical background will find it an acceptable foundation course in quantitative techniques. Research methodologY is also taught as a basic course in the recently introduced M. Phd. programmes in many Indian Universities. The book, we hope, shall cater to their requirements as well.
Writing a book on (( Research Methodology " is a big job and can be accomplished only by outstanding scholars in various discipliner. While being fully conscious of our limitations, we have made an humble attempt to reach our young research scholars with thir small help. Wthopa, they will find it useful as an introduction to research. The book has been carefully designed to cover all relevant topics to train the tesearcb students in their job.
