About the Book :
Research is an enquiry, method is a system and thesis is a style of communication. This implies that research is an effort, method is its systematization and thesis is its recorded manifestation. Thus, any book on research in reality becomes the presentation of recorded manifestation of effort systematization. Research method and thesis involve the concepts of contribution, system and dissemination. With the interminable expansion of knowledge and the accessibility to unlimited sources of information with just a click of a computer key, teaching research methodology now is equivalent to carrying out a ground-breaking research itself. The participants in M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes do not require teaching of research methodology, rather they require training in research methodology, for the material available in the market certainly acquaints them to different research skills which are required to carry out the research. Most books on research methods and methodology provide the distinctions between hypothesis, research question, and research problem formulation, etc. A research scholar undoubtedly understands these. But when he is asked to apply this to his study, there appears the problem. He gets confused as to research question, its relation with the research problem, research hypothesis and the aim of his research. The book The Craft of Language and Literary Research is an elementary guide to understand how to apply the basic concepts of research and research methodology to any form of study undertaken as research. It elaborately discusses the various aspects of research such as concept and theories of research, various types of research methods, research design, how to conduct research and document sources, etc. It is exclusively intended for M.Phil. and Ph.D. research scholars of language and literature. The book can serve as handbook for research supervisors as well.
