Indian Railways (IR) is the second largest railway sytem of the world and its vast network has a route kilometrage of 63,000 Km. About 14,400 trains run daily on the network carrying 14 million passengers and 1.4 million tonnes of freight. Author holistically examines this mammoth system in a simple and pragmatic manner and suggests future directions for the managers at various levels. The analysis is based basically on the personal experience of the Author and a chapter - `Learning from Experience' - gives detailed account of such experiences. The various facets of Railway Management including Human Resource Development, Technology, Systems, Marketing, Finance, Linkages and Public Relations have been covered. Safety on rail is of paramount importance and pragmatic suggestions have been made for enhancing it. To give a touch of Indian ethos an Appendix on `Yoga, Ancient Wisdom and Management' has been incorporated suggesting measures for stress reduction with enhanced efficiency/effectiveness for the practising managers.
