I really appreciate your effort of giving voice to women's emotions. A very well fabricated story of a woman rising from a lower middle class society to an independent career woman who succeeds in chasing her dreams inspite of all odds. You have very successfully depicted the picture of a neglected daughter , not loved much even by her sibling and an ignored wife and daughter-in-law. Leela craves for love throughout her life. The issues of traditional Indian society like neglection of girl child ,early marriage , domestic violence etc. have been very well portrayed in this novel. Silent suffering of an ideal Indian woman facing domestic violence , alongwith the psychic behaviour of a frustrated husband is well pictured. All the characters -Priya , Harleen , Lakshmi , Ma etc. have been justified. The flow of fiction is so spontaneous and obvious that the reader feels connected to the story and its characters. It is very inspiring for all the women . However , in Chapter-13 , I really don't approve of a woman tasting liquor. Not because , it is something astonishing or forbidden for women , but because , it is not good for health and general well-being of a woman. It shows weakness. It is not a sign if liberation , but of slavery to self-inferiority complex and sadness. But I understand that it is the author's effort of giving words to the first step of revolt growing inside leela's sub-conscious. Also , at many occassions ,reader feels sad and pityful for leela's conditions. Like one , when she accepts Harleen's offer to wear her used clothes and when she carries her shopping bags ..etc. But at the end , these friends only help her out and she is able to live a life of peace and dignity. So , it can be said that all the characters have been well justified and the author's great effort of raising voice against women exploitation is really appreciable.

I'm so very glad I could get hold of one of the first few copies of this book. At one end of the corridor, there's Leela, a naive Punjabi kudi ,who gets drawn into situations that leaves her crushed, but when pushed beyond a point she becomes a force to be reckoned with. The other end of the corridor is a book that makes you get up and think about the dilemmas faced by a common woman in uncommon situations, how a woman has to live up to the society's expectations, forgoing her dreams and suffer silently, and how it's time for that to change. That obstacles no matter how big they seem, shouldn't stop you from chasing your dream. Sujata Rajpal truly drives home the point. It's time women bring their dreams to life and not succumb to the society's notion of what a woman should be or should do. The language used by the author is pleasantly colloquial , yet gripping, which makes this book a hard one to put down. If this is the impact her first book leaves me with, I can't wait for more from her!
