The Tata Nano is prtesently the world's cheapest small car that is manufactured by Tata Motors in India. It is a rear-engined, four-passenger city car.
The Tata Nano was first presented at the 9th annual Auto Expo in 2008, at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India and was commercially launched on March 23, 2009 admist great hype. The bookings for the Tata Nano started from April 9 to April 25. The sales of the car will begin in July 2009, with a starting price of Rs 115,000 (rupees), cheaper than the Maruti 800, the next cheapest Indian car priced at 184,641 Rupees.
Indeed, Tata had sought to produce the least expensive production car in the world aiming for a starting price of Rs.100,000 (approximately US$2,000 in March 2009).
The term "Nano" has been derived from Gujarati language which means small. Incidenatlly, it is the language of the founders of the Tata Group. In English, the prefix "nano-" is often used to mean small. This derives from the Greek root 'nanos', meaning dwarf.
The Tata Nano comes in three trim levels and their key features available at the time of launch are:
Tata Nano Standard: It is the standard version, comes in three colour options, and has single-tone seats, and fold-down rear seat
Tata Nano CX: This variant comes in five colour options, with heating and air-conditioning (HVAC), two-tone seats, parcel shelf, booster-assisted brakes, fold-down rear seat with nap rest;
Tata Nano LX: This has the same features of CX. Additionally, it has fabric seats, central locking, front power windows, body coloured exteriors in three premium colours, fog lamps, electronic trip meter, cup holder in front console, mobile charger point, and rear spoiler. Many of these features are not available on current entry-level small cars in the country.
Coming to performance & other specifications like fuel efficiency, emmission and safety Tata Nano is the best, as it has not compromised in quality despite the low cost price.
The Tata Nano comes with a warranty: 18 months or 24,000 km, whichever is earlier.
